We are defined not only by our existing knowledge but also by our openness to new learning experiences.
A decade ago, when my grandmother Zelda passed away at the impressive age of 90, she bequeathed to me a collection of cherished personal belongings from her home—items she knew held special meaning for me after years of shared appreciation. Nestled among these treasures was a timeworn leather-bound journal, which she affectionately titled her Inspiration Journal.
During the latter part of her long life, Grandma Zelda diligently filled the pages of this journal with a diverse array of inspirations: fleeting ideas, profound reflections, memorable quotes, evocative song lyrics, and any other elements that stirred her soul. As a child, I had the privilege of listening to her recite passages from it, often prompting me to pose thoughtful questions in response. I truly attribute much of my current character and perspective to the invaluable wisdom she imparted during my formative years.
While I have previously shared select pieces of her insights through my blog and with newsletter readers, today marks the tenth anniversary of the day she transitioned to the afterlife. In tribute to her enduring legacy, I wish to recount some of my most treasured excerpts from her journal—passages she personally conveyed to me before her passing. I have carefully organized, refined, and structured her musings into twelve motivational principles. May these words bring you as much enlightenment and inspiration as they have brought me…
1. Inhale the possibilities of tomorrow, exhale the burdens of yesterday.
Regardless of your current location or the challenges you face, maintain unwavering faith that brighter days lie ahead, just beyond the present darkness. Avoid placing rigid expectations, unfounded assumptions, or insistent demands on life’s unfolding path. Instead, commit fully to your efforts, manage the aspects within your influence, and then release attachment to the outcome. After exhausting your best endeavors, trust that if it aligns with your destiny, it will manifest—or it will illuminate the subsequent action required.
2. Simplicity in living is entirely within your reach once more.
Make a conscious decision to concentrate on a single task or moment at a time. You are under no obligation to accomplish everything simultaneously, nor must it all happen immediately. Take deep, calming breaths, remain fully engaged in the here and now, and apply your utmost dedication to the matter at hand. The energy and intention you invest in life tend to return to you amplified manyfold. This philosophy echoes the timeless wisdom found in a book that rested on my grandmother’s nightstand for years.
3. Allow others to accept you authentically, or step aside entirely.
Express your truth boldly and pursue your path steadfastly, even if your voice trembles or your steps falter. Authentic self-expression introduces a unique beauty into the world that previously did not exist. Therefore, traverse your journey with assurance, without anticipating that others will fully comprehend it—particularly those who have not traversed identical terrain.
4. Embrace the reality that you have evolved beyond your former self, and that transformation is perfectly acceptable.
You have endured pain, navigated countless peaks and valleys, all of which have sculpted the person you are today. Across the span of years, innumerable events have transpired—experiences that reshaped your worldview, delivered essential lessons, and compelled your inner strength to expand profoundly. As time progresses, personal evolution is inevitable, yet some may remark that you have altered. To them, you might reply, “Naturally, I have changed; that is the very essence of living. Yet at my core, I remain the same individual, merely fortified with greater resilience than ever before.”
5. Every experience contributes to your personal development, even when its benefits are not immediately apparent.
Life’s circumstances will guide, refine, and ultimately perfect you through the passage of time. Thus, no matter the situation, cling steadfastly to optimism. Even the slenderest strand of hope can weave into an indestructible lifeline. Allow this hope to secure you amid uncertainty, affirming that your narrative continues and that shifting currents will eventually guide you to tranquil harbors.
6. True happiness represents an invaluable treasure beyond material wealth.
Rather than pursuing education solely for financial gain, seek knowledge that cultivates genuine joy. In your later years, this approach will reveal the authentic worth of life’s offerings, far surpassing mere monetary value. You will discover that your most fulfilling days arise not from extraordinary events or lavish indulgences but from savoring ordinary moments with deep gratitude, desiring nothing further. This essence captures the profound reality of happiness.
7. Commit to fostering a positive outlook, particularly on ordinary days.
Recognize that the bulk of your discontent or sorrow stems not from external conditions but from your internal mindset. Today, grant yourself permission for grace and renewal. Shift your focus away from those who have disappointed you, redirecting your attention and vitality toward valuing those who elevate and inspire you. Keep in mind that while you cannot dictate the rude words or actions of others, you hold the power to choose not to let them derail your peace.
8. Offer your full presence to the people who matter most in your life.
There are moments when a dear one utters, “I’m fine,” yet their eyes betray deeper struggles. In such instances, meet their gaze directly, envelop them in a warm embrace, and respond, “I see through that—you’re truly not.” Moreover, refrain from taking offense if certain individuals contact you only during their trials. Consider it an honor that you serve as their guiding light amid personal shadows.
9. Granting independence is one of the greatest gifts you can bestow.
At times, true growth for another requires releasing them to navigate their own path. Ultimately, throughout their lifetime, it is not the actions you perform on their behalf but the self-reliance you instill that forges them into a thriving, capable individual.
10. Certain relationships will naturally fade as you mature.
Achieving the outcomes you desire sometimes necessitates creating distance from those whose influence hinders your progress. This intentional space paves the way for connections with individuals who champion your highest potential. Such shifts occur organically as you evolve, clarifying your identity and needs, and revealing that long-standing associates may no longer align with your vision. Cherish the fond recollections, yet proceed forward unburdened.
11. Trust your inner voice without seeking external validation.
Reflecting on life, it is far more rewarding to recall, “I can scarcely believe I took that bold step,” than to lament, “I regret not acting on that impulse.” Regardless, others will form opinions about your choices. Thus, forgo efforts to win universal approval; prioritize a life that earns your own admiration. Cultivate such profound self-love that you refuse to compromise your principles for anyone.
12. Conclusions frequently herald the dawn of extraordinary new adventures.
If a sought-after resolution eludes you, consider redirecting your search toward fresh opportunities. Dust yourself off, acknowledge that setbacks are integral to learning, and persevere. The most resilient individuals—those radiating authentic joy—have often endured the fiercest struggles. Their smiles stem from a resolute choice to rise above adversity, releasing past weights and advancing steadily, one deliberate step after another.
A Personal Commitment to Live By…
As I conclude this heartfelt homage to my grandmother, a cherished poem fragment by Christian D. Larson comes to mind—one she prominently displayed on her refrigerator during my childhood. Once I grasped its meaning, she copied it for me, and remarkably, over three decades later, that very photocopy remains laminated on my office bulletin board. These lines embodied the principles she aspired to embody daily:
Promise Yourself…
- To harbor only the finest thoughts, labor solely for excellence, and execute your utmost capability.
- To celebrate others’ triumphs with the same fervor as your own.
- To release bygone errors and advance toward loftier accomplishments in the now.
- To maintain a welcoming expression always and greet every soul with a genuine smile.
- To dedicate ample time to your self-betterment, leaving none for critiquing others.
- To be too purpose-driven for anxiety, too dignified for rage, too robust for dread, and too serene for turmoil.
- To hold yourself in high regard and demonstrate it through exemplary actions, not mere declarations.
- To embrace the belief that the universe supports you when you honor your innermost virtues.
